Shillong Municipal Board constituted under the Meghalaya Municipal Act 1973, is required to take up such works which are essential for provision of the civic services and management of the city.

 To ensure the right to public health, efficient and quality basic services to all citizens, to provide a congenial environment, to bridge the gap between the have and the have nots, in tune to a living standard of the present age.

  • Facilitating upgradation of the means of livelihood and living standards of the urban poor.

Basic Services

  • Solid waste and sanitation management
  • Maintenance and management of water supply.

  • Maintenance and management of Municipal markets, stalls, public utilities
  • Regulation of hygienic conditions of food stalls, restaurants, hotels, milk supply, etc
  • Provision of parking space
  • Maintenance of footpaths, lanes, by-lanes, drainage system, public toilets
  • Improving living standard of urban poor through various components of SJSRY and NSDP

 

Institutional Capacity of SMB
SMB is headed by a CEO who has nine departments which operate under his guidance and supervision. These include general administration, license, collection, accounts, public works, water works, births & deaths, UPA & NRY, health & conservancy, establishment department, assessment and building. Apart from SMB, like any other city, Shillong also has multiple agencies involved in development of urban infrastructure and service delivery as apparent from the table below. The urban Affairs Department(UAD), Meghalaya Urban Development Authority(MUDA), Public Health Engineering Department(PHED),Public Works Department(PWD),Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Ltd (MeECL), Khasi Hills District Council (KHADC) and the Traditional Institutions (TI) are responsible for Urban Infrastructure and Services in Shillong Municipal Town and the areas outside SMB.
